Sexual Assault: How Can We Help?

By Danny

As we celebrate the 21st anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), we take a moment to reflect on the growth toward equality and protection that has been accomplished – as well as the steps required to ensure all women and men are safe to speak about their experiences and stories. Sexual Assault Awareness Month provides an opportunity for survivors to take up space and advocate not only for themselves but for others as well.

Entering discussions about sexual assault is more prevalent than ever on college campuses, and it should be heavily emphasized that sexual violence is far more common than it is acknowledged in the current climate of issues. According to the CNC, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced sexual violence. Though the data shown is disturbingly high, we should remember this gives each person a place in rising above and speaking about such personal experiences. Moreover, this gives room for one to stand with and listen to his or her peers in a space of vulnerability and passion.

We, therefore, stand up and ask, “how can we help?” This moves in waves and speaks volumes to younger generations who are empowered to bring about positive change in the world. The Students Against Sexual Violence (SASV) at James Madison University make way for others to follow and engage in the issue – providing a space for vulnerability, community, and individual empowerment during the month of April. Upcoming events for students to engage in include the following:

April 6th from 10 am to 2 pm: Passing out Consent Condoms and the “Consent Wheels” activity at Warner Commons
April 14th from 6 pm to 7 pm: Take Back the Night with Victim Advocacy followed by a flower release event at Newman Lake
April 21st from 10 am to 2 pm: Trivia, Buttons, and Stickers at Warner Commons
April 27th (time and location coming soon!): Denim Day Photo Booth

The events sponsored by Students Against Sexual Violence provide this room for space and community required for growth and unity among the young and powerful students on campus. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, follow the Students Against Sexual Violence on Instagram @sasvjmu.
